Reading isn’t dying. It's getting more intentional.
There’s an article making the rounds called “The End of Reading Is Here.” It argues that we're sliding into a "post-literate" era — shorter sentences, shrinking attention spans, reading treated as a fading hobby. The numbers in it are real. Reading has declined by a lot, by several honest measures. We just don't think decline is the whole story, and we don't think it's the most interesting point either.
Here’s the part of the story that’s getting left out
Independent bookstores have had some of their best years on record lately, with hundreds of new stores opening annually. Barnes & Noble, left for dead a decade ago, has been opening new locations instead of closing them. People who do read are spending more time with books per day than they did twenty years ago. None of that looks like a culture giving up on reading. It looks like we’re getting pickier about it — reading less by volume, more on purpose.
